Electric Shade of NEON

The electric shades that hit their peak in the '80s are returning in a much more sophisticated way, now paired with neutral colors such as gray, navy, or camel.

Yes, this trend of neons are in for fall. I know it might seem crazy and a little out there to wear these during a season of warm colors. When you think of fall you thing of warm browns, reds, greens, and oranges. Well throw those away and bring out the neon.

These shades of bright pink, green, yellow, and blue are being paired with nuetral colors to dull down this statement color. The reason why they are paired with neutral colors is to not make these colors clash, like how they did in the 80s. Its bringing the 80s back in a more sophisticated way.

Here are some ways you can wear the ElectricShades of NEON:

  • You can have a solid nuetral shirt and pair it with a neon leather skirt. Amp up your business wear and make your coworkers feel the electricty.
Looking for summer leather? Consider the unusual neon skirts from Proenza Schouler (pictured) or McQ Alexander McQueen. Paired with a simple white tee, they’re an easy way to inject color into your wardrobe—and if you switch out the T-shirt for a heather gray crewneck come September, you can easily carry these cool pieces into your fall wardrobe.
  • You can also wear a neon lip for that pop of color, but not too much.
  • Go for the jewelry. There's a bunch of neon jewlery that are very chic and just unique enough to make a statement.

Wearing neon is the style equivalent of texting in all-caps, so you’ve got to be ready for it. But if you can’t imagine your office dress matching the Staples highlighter aisle, it’s okay: Thanks to accessories mavens like Tom Binns, and Dannijo you can add a pop of neon into your jewelry collection and stick with your everyday LBD uniform, too. (On the Hollywood front, actress Alison Williams recently wore a crisp white shirt with a neon necklace on the red carpet, and looked way more together than her alter-ego Marni.)

  • And lastly, wear a neon colored crossbody bag. It's a simple way to always have that electric shade of neon.

Neon handbags are an easy way to surf the day-glo trend, but once again, contrast is key. A giant neon purse might scream “Malibu Barbie” a little more than you’d intended (and your friends may suspect a small Chihuahua named Tinkerbell lives inside it). Instead, go for the trusty crossbody bag, which has a more compact shape, and gives you the option of bringing the neon strap all the way across your body. (This looks especially cool with chambray denim.) Our favorites:
